It is a town of two halves for tree work. The established residential streets carry mature shade trees planted close to the road and the wires. Out toward Ragged Mountain and the reservoir land the lots get larger and more wooded, and the trees are taller, older and further from a road a truck can park on.
What grows here
Red and white oak, sugar maple, eastern white pine and hickory are common through Berlin, with hemlock on the cooler north-facing slopes near the ridge.
Storm-damaged pine is a recurring call here. White pine sheds large limbs under wet snow and ice loading, and it tends to do it without much warning.
Getting to the tree

That is not ordinary tree work: it is done around live conductors, usually in bad weather, alongside utility crews. Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Berlin?
Connecticut does not generally require a permit to remove a tree on your own property.
What the state does require is that anyone advertising, recommending or soliciting tree work holds a valid Connecticut Arborist licence. Ours is CT # S4559.
