Old trees, and the case for keeping them
Farmington is one of the towns we work in regularly, and it has some of the oldest standing trees of anywhere we go. The historic district along Main Street and the properties running down toward the Farmington River carry mature specimen trees that have been part of those streetscapes for generations.
On a tree like that the first question is usually not whether it can be removed but whether it needs to be. A structurally weak union can often be cabled and braced instead of taken down.

What grows here
Sugar maple, white oak, American beech and eastern white pine are common through Farmington, with sycamore and silver maple on the lower ground near the river.
Older maples in particular tend to develop tight, included-bark forks — two stems growing so close that bark becomes trapped between them and the union never properly knits. That is precisely the defect cabling is designed to support.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Farmington?
