Why Hamden properties are different
Hamden is one of the towns we work in regularly, and it is steep ground. The Sleeping Giant and West Rock ridges run through the town, and a great deal of its residential property backs straight onto woodland.
That changes the work in two ways. Trees grown in a closed woodland draw up tall and thin competing for light, so when they fail they tend to fail high in the stem rather than at the base. Hemlock woolly adelgid has thinned a lot of Connecticut hemlock. A hemlock that has been declining for years is a different job from a healthy one — the wood behaves differently, and that has to be planned for before anyone leaves the ground.
Getting to the tree
Slope is the defining constraint in Hamden. On a pitched, wooded lot a bucket truck often cannot be positioned safely at all, so sections come down on ropes and rigging rather than from a lift. Rich's 39 years of climbing experience reaches trees a large bucket truck simply cannot.
